DTZ exams

  • What is a DTZ exam?

The final test consists of two exams: the "German Test for Immigrants" (DTZ) and the "Living in Germany" test. With the DTZ, participants can demonstrate their German language skills according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Depending on the results, they will be certified at either level A2 or B1.

  • What do I need to be able to do in the “listening” part of the exam?

You should be able to understand audio texts from everyday German life and public life – e.g., telephone messages, announcements, instructions, radio broadcasts or conversations between native speakers.

How is the “listening” part of the exam structured?

The listening comprehension test consists of four parts with a total of 20 tasks:

Part 1 & 2: Short announcements, e.g., from the radio or on the telephone

Part 3: Four short conversation situations

Part 4: Individual statements on a specific topic

  • What can I expect in the reading section of the exam?

In the "Reading" section, you will work through five task areas with a total of 25 tasks. You will read authentic texts from everyday life – e.g., advertisements, signs, notices from school or kindergarten, brochures, product information, instructions, emails, or letters. You should understand the texts both at a glance and in important details.

  • What can I expect in the writing part of the exam?

In the "Writing" section, you will compose a short text—e.g., a letter or an email. You can choose from two tasks. These demonstrate your ability to communicate in written German, e.g., in a message, note, or correspondence.

  • What can I expect in the “Speaking” part of the exam?

In the "Speaking" section, you will complete three tasks in which you will master typical everyday situations – for example, introducing yourself, talking about an experience, or planning something together. You will alternate between individual contributions (monologue) and conversations with the examiners or other participants (dialogue). The goal is to exchange information and actively participate in discussions.
